More information about camas

Purple flowers

Camas is a tuber of importance equal to salmon and traded nearly as much on the Columbia. It's nourishing and sweet when baked. It's a blood sugar regulator. Native folks tended camas on prairie (and burned prairie) and cultivated it much as we might in today's permaculture. It is diminished, but coming back regionally because many people are planting it in prairies and wetlands and open spaces (where wildflowers grow, so camas grow). Native people are bringing it back and educating!
